RCA RTB1100 Home Theater System Review-Decent But Troubled

RCA has long been associated with good quality audio gear, but this time we’re going to get an exception to the rule with the surprisingly lower quality RCA RTB1100. No one ever wins them all, and this one from RCA is going to be one that you’ll want to be careful with.

The RCA RTB1100 is a thousand watt 5.1 channel home theater system that includes four satellite speakers, a center channel speaker, a subwoofer and an included Blu-ray player. You’ll also get BD Live connectivity which gives you extra options on some Blu-ray discs, upconversion on regular DVDs, a digital AM / FM radio tuner, digital optical audio input, and both Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus decoders.

It’s hard to imagine how such a package as that would fail to satisfy–the sound is pretty nice, though the bass is a little on the weak side–but there have been reports that the Blu-ray player is prone to some errors. Secondhand information, I admit, but certainly something to be considered.

However, considering that you’re getting a full home theater system, complete with Blu-ray player for $299.01 out at Amazon, and less if you look for it elsewhere, it’s hard to imagine that this would be a bad move.  Even if it turns out the Blu-ray player is completely useless–which it doesn’t seem to be–it’s still going to be a decent buy. I expect a little more out of RCA than this, but still.

The RCA RTB1100 has a surprising amount going for it, but given the number of problems it’s reportedly having, you may want to think twice before going this route.
