Orders Being Taken for SF Symphonys Mahler No. 3 SACD [HFR]

The San Francisco Symphony’s record label, SFS Media, announced on the symphony’s web site that they are now accepting orders for the 3rd recording in the orchestra’s Mahler cycle on SACD. The new release features Michael Tilson-Thomas conducting the San Francisco Symphony performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 as well as Mahler’s composition entitled “Kindertotenlieder.”

Potential buyers will be interested to learn that the web site also has some preview sound clips from the new album as well as a video of the making of the earlier Mahler Symphony No. 6 recording.

As with their 2 previous Mahler releases, the new Mahler Symphony No. 3 album is a 2 disc, Hybrid Multichannel SACD set. The discs feature Multichannel SACD, Stereo SACD and Stereo CD versions of the music on the album. The SACDs are playable on both SACD and CD equipment.

Here’s what SFS Media has to say about this new SACD release: Coming on the heels of the Grammy award for their recording of the Mahler Sixth Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony present Mahler Symphony No. 3 and Kindertotenlieder.

This next installment of the MTT/SFS Mahler cycle, The Mahler Third, is the most expansive of the composer’s symphonies.

There are moments of angst here, but the overwhelming message is of love’s redeeming power, and the peaks this great work scales are some of the most glorious in all music.

The Mahler Third features mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, the Women of the SFS Chorus, the Pacific Boychoir, and the San Francisco Girls Chorus. Also included in this two-disc set is a recording of Mahler’s heartbreaking Kindertotenlieder, with Michelle DeYoung.
