Customers of the Music Direct web site recently received the company’s new 2003 catalog in the mail. Towards the back of the new catalog, they were greeted with an ad that not only listed the label’s next 3 SACDs due out in January (Sonny Rollins Plus 4, Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes and Blackjack David by Dave Alvin) but 5 new SACD titles and a promise of even more in 2003.
Intrigued by this, I contacted Colie Brice, Mobile Fidelity’s new Director of Communications. As some of you may know, Brice was recently hired away from Classic Records as part of Mobile Fidelity’s planned expansion in 2003.
Brice told me that Mobile Fidelity is very enthused about the prospect of releasing more high quality, audiophile titles in the SACD format. He said that «With the creative palette opened by DSD & Surround, the engineer is the artist.»
Brice also confirmed that Mobile Fidelity will indeed be expanding their catalog of Hybrid Stereo SACDs in the coming year.
In 2003, Mobile Fidelity will be releasing a number of new Hybrid Stereo SACDs including these 11 that are already confirmed:
More Releases in 2003
In addition to the Hybrid Stereo SACD releases already announced, the new Music Direct catalog also mentions that Mobile Fidelity fans should «look for more releases in 2003 from these artists on SACD, Gold Disc and LP» and then they list several key artists including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Beach Boys, Albert King, Linda Ronstadt, Holly Cole, Beastie Boys, Jerry Garcia, Leo Kottke, Big Star, John Lee Hooker, The Kinks, Ted Nugent, Nancy Wilson, David Grisman «and many others.»
You’ll note that some of these artists already have albums on the Mobile Fidelity SACD release list for 2003. As to the others, Colie Brice says we’ll hear more about those albums and what format(s) they’ll be appearing on under the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs label soon. We’ll be watching for more information on that score in 2003.
