2008 Surround Sound Grammy Nominees Announed

The Recording Academy has announced the nominees for the 2008 Best Surround Sound Album Grammy Award. Nominees in what is known in the trade as “Field 28 – Surround Sound, Category 95 – Best Surround Album” include albums by the Flaming Lips, Porcupine Tree, Charles Bruffy conducting the Kansas City Chorale & Phoenix Bach Choir, the Beatles and Robert Spano conducting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chamber Chorus. Record companies represented in the list of nominations include Warner Brothers, Atlantic, Chandos, Apple/Capitol and Telarc.

Some of you are probably thinking, “Why would a self-respecting jazz writer give a rat’s rear about the Grammy Awards?” Well, I never really have before. Not sure exactly what changed my mind this year…maybe it was the pressure to write something before my deadline for this month’s issue, maybe it was guilt over not having a proper “best CDs of 2006” column…this way I can let the Grammy people come up with a list for me, and all I have to do is make comments. Al Schmitt introduced Surround Professional 2003’s keynote speaker, Phil Ramone, saying that usually he was irreverent when he spoke of Phil but this time he wanted to be serious. Al said that he and Phil are great friends and that it was a great pleasure and an honour to introduce Phil – in fact they are such good friends that they even went on a cruise together.
