Analog Devices Respond to Claims of Misleading Information

In early December, we ran a news story reacting to a press release from Analog Devices promoting the addition of DTS 96/24 capabilities to their family of Melody™ decode engines.

In the opinion of High Fidelity Review, the following excerpt could be considered both misleading and inaccurate – “When encoded in the video zone of DVD-Audio discs, DTS 96/24 delivers 96/24 audio resolution on any existing DVD-Video player, eliminating the need for a separate DVD-Audio player…” since DTS 96/24 is a lossy system and in no way is to be considered the equal of or a substitute for Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP), the loss-less system employed by DVD-Audio. read more…

Digital Interface for DVD-Audio and DVD-Video Specifications

The DVD Forum has released guidelines for a DVD-Audio digital interface via IEEE 1394, also known as Firewire or iLink.

The 129 page document, recently published but dated September 2001, details the transmission of both digital audio and video from DVD-Audio and DVD-Video players through an IEEE 1394 (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.) bus to peripheral equipment, such as receivers, processors and even digital televisions. read more…

Three New EMI DVD-Audio Releases

Three new DVD-Audio releases will be added to the EMI catalogue on February 12th, 2002.

They are: ‘Greatest Hits’ by Al Green, ‘Ah Via Musicom’ by Eric Johnson and ‘The Dance’ by Dave Koz.

Apex Ships AD-7701 Universal DVD-Audio/SACD Player

The Apex AD-7701 universal DVD-Audio/SACD player is shipping, almost twelve months after SMR Home Theatre’s CES 2001 Show Report first broke news of the machine.

Sales of DVD-Audio players greatly outpaced those of SACD players during the first three quarters of 2001, according to market research organisation NPD Intelect of Port Washington, N.Y.

Sales of DVD-Audio players reached 21,022, as against just 370 during the whole of 2000, an increase of 5,582%. read more…

Yes DVD-Audio Releases Planned for May 2002

The two long-awaited Yes DVD-Audio discs are now scheduled for release on May 28th, 2002.

If all goes to plan, ‘Magnification’ (2001) and ‘Close To The Edge’ (1972) will both feature 5.1 Dolby Digital and Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) tracks at 96/24, plus a two-channel 96/24 MLP track for the surround-challenged. read more…
