I just did a sweep on this awful sounding set of Sony’s to try and figure out what exactly was going on. With a spec sheet that’s not even believable in any way (when has Sony ever posted a real spec sheet on anything they r ever made that wasn’t just made up lies?) I felt I should run a sweep to see what a perfect flat response looks like.
Going by all the fantastic reviews from those who have never bought a real set of speakers in their life, real speakers are made by companies that only make speakers, I could only think that these Sonys had something really special going on. Skeptical as I am about anything sony makes, I have learned not to prejudge anything befote getting my own personal testing completed. There have been 1 or 2 surprises in my 60 years of life.
The listening test was difficult to endure for more a minute when you know you are wasting your time and hearing what sounds like someone looked through a catalog of cheap drivers with their eyes closed and used the cheapest drivers they could find regardless of any specs or real world usage beyond if they fit in the cabinets. The cabinets are simply barrowed design from a pile of others that have been made by various companies that found out they had nothing better to offer than a much more ist effective simple box and ditched them quickly. But I think sony picked up the cabinets first then bought cheap drivers to fill the holes because that’s how they sound. I can make a better sounding speakers for about $1o and I have. I tested them both head to head and I found this high output (claimed up to 70KHz) reached to just 9KHz before it took a nose dive then has a slight bump about 1db at 16KHz then nothing after 22JHz.
The graph looks like an outline sketch of a mountain range with no low tones able to hit the bar until 400Hz! The lowest is 100Hz and is down 7db but stays -7db all the way to 400Hz where it starts to firm a peak at 440Hz and another at 600Hz then dives at 1.2KHz -4db. But then the tweeter kicks in and off it goes with a huge gain from 3KHz to 9KHz +10 then drops to about -6db till 16KHz -5 till 22KHz where it drops out
My tandom diy using cabinets one third the size and 4″ drivers with unknown tweeters and incorrect crossovers stomps these. Low end all the way through these look like a joke on an RTA. They sound exactly as they plotted.
If you have these and consider them to be the best speakers you’ve ever heard, I would suggest you get out more and listen to what others who own speakers made by a company that just makes speakers has to say. I’m sure that even best buy carries a much better speaker than this for less than these cost. I’m just guessing since I have not been to a best buy in 25 years.
Every other speaker I’ve tested so far has better results than these (24 tested so far).
Even some old radio shack minimus 7s have far better sound than these and they’re only 6″ tall by 4″ wide by 4″ deep with a 3″ woofer!
