Sony PlayStation 3 Gaming Console Becomes Latest Super Audio CD Playback Option

Earlier today, Sony released the long-awaited PlayStation 3 gaming console. In addition to providing gaming fans with 1080p level video and a Blu-Ray Disc drive, the console also offers playback of both Single Layer and Hybrid Super Audio CDs in Mono, Stereo and Multichannel Audio sound. The product comes in two editions – a Basic edition selling for a list price of $499 and a Premium edition that sells for a list price of $599. (The difference between the two units is that the Premium unit features Wi-Fi, a 60GB hard disk drive and several flash memory readers while the Basic unit has a smaller 20GB hard disk drive and does not include WiFi or the flash memory readers.) read more…

Telarc Surround Sound SACD Nominated for the Annual TEC Awards

Telarc International announced that their highly applauded Surround Sound Super Audio CD release of Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 5 and Fantasia on a Theme By Thomas Tallis (Telarc SACD 60676) has been nominated for a Technical Excellence and Creativity (TEC) Award. The disc received its nomination in the category of Surround Sound recording. Other nominees in the category include albums and DVD Videos by Porcupine Tree, James Taylor, Shakira and Paul McCartney. The winners of the 24th Annual TEC Awards will be announced on October 3rd at a ceremony to be held in San Francisco sponsored by Mix Magazine. read more…

Long time audiophile specialists McIntosh Labs have added a third Super Audio CD player to their line up with the release of the MCD 301. The new high end disc player is a 2 Channel unit that plays Stereo Super Audio CD discs and Stereo CD discs as well as CD-R and CD-RW discs that have MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) music files. CES 2008: Universal Music to Distribute Ondine Label in North American Market

CES 2008: Ondine has announced that the Universal Music Classical division of the Universal Music Group (UMG) will be distributing all of its «physical and digital» titles starting in 2008. CES 2008: FIM Continues Audio Innovation with SACD, K2 HD and HRx Discs and Demos

CES 2008: First Impression Music (FIM) will highlight several different music formats during the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The 2008 edition of CES starts tonight with some pre-show press events that will be followed by an all-day «Press Day» event on Sunday and then exhibits that start on Monday.

FIM and its owner Winston Ma have been known for years as innovators in the high end audio arena. As a result of always pushing the boundaries in high end audio, the company is often among the first with new audio innovations and formats. That theme will be evident at CES this year as FIM highlights three different ways of moving Stereo two channel audio ahead. FIM will be showing their catalog of Stereo and Surround Sound Super Audio CD (SACD) discs including their latest release — Sway by singer Michael Gold. Also on display will be the label’s initial releases in JVC’s «K2 HD» enhancement of Redbook CDs.

Finally, FIM will be previewing the new «HRx» format of high resolution Stereo WAV files developed by Reference Recordings. read more…

2008 Surround Sound Grammy Nominees Announed

The Recording Academy has announced the nominees for the 2008 Best Surround Sound Album Grammy Award. Nominees in what is known in the trade as “Field 28 – Surround Sound, Category 95 – Best Surround Album” include albums by the Flaming Lips, Porcupine Tree, Charles Bruffy conducting the Kansas City Chorale & Phoenix Bach Choir, the Beatles and Robert Spano conducting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chamber Chorus. Record companies represented in the list of nominations include Warner Brothers, Atlantic, Chandos, Apple/Capitol and Telarc.
