How video goes from 2D to 3D

I thought with all the hype for 3D in home theaters, it might be a good time to talk about 3D technology in general.

I’m sure you are probably aware of the 3D of Avatar, a film shot in 3D, but recent 3D offerings such as Alice and Wonderland and Clash of the Titans are converted into 3D. According to my source, Alice took four to six months to convert to 3D, but Clash was done in a mere eight to ten weeks.

It may take 80 to 100 thousand dollars per minute to do dimensionalization, which certainly makes it more expensive than filming in 3D. You’d better hope that the 3D upgrade is worth it. Something tells me that CG films are a lot easier to 3D upgrade.
