Three times a year, Sony & Philips issue a catalog that lists all of the current and upcoming SACDs for the U.S. market. The newest of these SACD disc catalogs dated September 2002 (09.02) was released to the press this week. Copies will be made available to Tower Records and other SACD outlets shortly.

In the new catalog, Sony and Philips highlight approximately 500 SACD titles that are either currently available or are scheduled for release in the near future. Of interest in this edition are new titles from Blue Note (Bob Belden, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, John Coltrane, Bill Charlup and Norah Jones) and Sony Music (James Taylor, Five for Fighting, Oasis, Mary Mary, Tony Bennett & Friends, Ozzy Osbourne and David Bowie) as well as more details on the initial release of SACDs from the Universal Music Group.

Universal Music Group SACDs – Both Single Layer and Hybrid Layer?
While the Universal Music Group SACD titles were announced earlier, the SACD catalog listing is of interest because it reveals that these SACD disc releases will be on both Single Layer and Hybrid Layer format. This is an unusual choice – generally the SACD record labels issue their titles in Hybrid Layer format (most labels) or Single Layer format (Sony Music and Red Rose Music) – but not both.

Hybrid Layer SACDs are playable on both CD and SACD players while Single Layer SACDs are playable only on SACD players. It will be interesting to see if these plans hold true with the finished product starts arriving in late October – and whether future Universal Music SACDs continue to be issued in both SACD formats.
